My name is David Ripley. This course was a joint effort between Robert Morales and I. Robert is a black belt under Joe Moreira. He taught the techniques and I developed and added the accelerated learning part to the DVD's.  When I first started taking classes in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu I found that after getting home from class I couldn't remember a lot of what I had learned in class. If we learned 4 techniques I'd probably remember one of them and just some of the details of the others. I wanted to do something about that or I'd just be wasting a large percentage of my time and money. I began reading books about methods of accelerated learning that were being used by athletes in European countries to see if they could help with learning Brazilian Jiu Jitsu techniques. To make a long story short I found out that they worked even better than I had thought they would. In fact the results were amazing. I spent about a a year experimenting with applying accelerated learning methods to the learning of BJJ techniques.  I eventually developed my own method of accelerated learning which was sport specific and very effective. Then I wrote a small book telling about how I was applying it to the learning of BJJ techniques and sold it on the internet for awhile.  Robert Morales (the teacher in our DVD's) bought it and liked it so much that he called me to talk about it. We then decided to do a joint project and produce the Blue Belt Accelerated Learning Course. If you are having the same problem and you find it hard to apply techniques that you thought you knew while rolling because the memory download of all the details of the technique comes a little too late, you'll find this course to be amazingly helpful.

Some people who haven't purchased the course and therefore know nothing about it have come to the erroneous conclusion that this method is a substitute for mat time. Here's what Robert Morale (Black belt under Joe Moreira and teacher on the dvd's has to say about that.

"I totally believe that there is NO substitute for mat time. In this case, mat will be used to enhance you as a grappler, to develop FEEL if you will. Sensitivity is an important physical attribute that cannot be ignored. But most jiu-jitsu fighters are developing Jiu-jitsu submission skills and grappling skills at the same time and this is why progress is delayed. Now if you were learning Brazilian Jiu Jitsu submissions and sweeps and escapes etc. at home with Dr. Ripley’s method Class time will consist of becoming a better grappler developing sensitivity and the jiu-jitsu techniques will flow out naturally. I know it sounds to good to be true but it isn't". End of quote.

The accelerated learning technique is meant to compliment mat time and when it is used it enables one to learn a lot of techniques in a short period of time and spend less mat time repeating techniques to develop them to an instinctive level.

Testimonials

Hi David

Thank you for your interest in how I'm progressing with the Accelerated Learning Blue Belt Course.

I'm still on the first disc at the moment, as I spent some time reading the book a couple of times before starting wotk with the DVD's. The ease of use thus far is beyond belief. I have bought various BJJ/Grappling DVD titles in the past and by the time I've finished watching a 60 minute program I'm lucky if I can remember one or two of the techniques and by the time I get to class, they're pretty much gone completely.

However, with your program, I was able to remember every technique (12 in all) about 3 hours later, then the following day, when using the superlearning exercise they came back as clear as day. If the remaining 6 discs are as good as this first one, then it's been worth every penny.

I'm studying Japanese Ju Jitsu at the moment and my Instructor had a very strong group of grappling and normally rolls with me privately at least once a week. Within 3 days of using your program, my Instructor had noticed a major difference in my game while working on the ground.

As and when you release the Purple Belt program I will most definitely be purchasing it simply because it works!

I have been involved with the martial arts for 28 years and I have never been so impressed with a program as I have been with yours. I'm currently a 6th Degree Black Belt and a holder of three other Black Belts in various martial arts. I also run 6 Schools here in England.

Please feel free to edit or use this e-mail to endorse your program in any way that you feel would be of help.

PS: Any information on the Belt Resting Requirements would be kindly received - I have yet to receive this.

Kindest regards,
Len Woplin

As a RELSON GRACIE student and a martial artist for 15 years it takes a lot to impress me: to say this program has done so is an understatement! As I also have an undiagnosed knee injury and 2 fractured feet that prevents
me from training altogether, I needed to improvise so I could still train. The accelerated tapes allow me to do so. In my professional opinion this program is the greatest invention since the arm bar!!!!

Thank you DAVID!

MMA.com review

I recently received Dr. Ripley's accelerated bjj course and to say I am pleased is an understatement! The blue belt course is outstanding in content, presentation, production quality, and technical material. The course is a white to blue belt progression. You may think that "so what, I already know all that! Where's the advanced half guard new age bjj??" but this course is much, MUCH different from anything you have seen before. It comes with 7 tapes and an excellent manual laying out the fundamental accelerated learning principles and guidelines. Many of you will have seen most of the variations of the techniques before. What makes this series so unique and valuable is the WAY the material is presented to you. Using the latest research in accelerated learning principles and whole brain learning strategies, Dr. Ripley has forged the most unique instructional series in the bjj market to date. He maps out a blueprint for how anyone can use accelerated learning strategies to radically diminish the time it takes to achieve an instinctive level in your bjj techniques. You can perform at an instinctive level in a fraction of the time using his method. Sound to good to be true? Try it! You'll find within a couple of days you can't get the techs. out of your mind! This course is perfect for those of us who can't spend 5-6 times a week in class training due to family, jobs, etc. It will allow you to maximize your training time. Most could easily find the time to do the mental imagery exercises that bring the techs. to an instinctive level within 2 weeks! The techs. are well taught by Mr. Morales (a Moreira black belt). They are followed with various mental drills that imprint the technical sequences and their triggers deep into your subconscious mind. Before ANY PHYSICAL action occurs, there is a thought form created (no matter how brief, it is there). Many people erroneously believe that physical repetition is the ONLY way to achieve automatic responses. They believe somehow that physical training/repetition bypasses the thought process. It doesn't! A thought preceeds EVERY physical action. Your brain perceives an opening or cue, then selects an appropriate technique from the menu options that exist in your brain and you react. Have you ever noticed when you spar that you know certain techniques, but your decision making process seems to lag behind or you hesitate?  If so, Dr. Ripley will explain to you why this occurs and what to do about it. Ever fumble with the execution of basic techniques and lose the moment of opportunity? He'll explain why that occurs, too. Dr. Ripley teaches one to think out of the box and rapidly acquire skills you thought would take you months of repetitive physical training. He explains the myth of physical repetition training being the ONLY way to instinctive response while sparring. In short, you will learn a new and expansive way to learn any new grappling techniques...whether in class or on other videos. You will learn to break down technique into those crucial details, then recall them at will, easily! You will also learn how to approach instinctive action without thousands of physical repetitions. You will learn how you learn, and improve your teaching ability along the way by being able to break any movement into its most important parts and assigning keywords to describe them. This series will change how you train and how you approach learning new material, from any grappling source. As a note, I don't work for Dr. Ripley or Speedjiujitsu.com. I have no interest in the company. I don't know Dr. Ripley or Mr. Morales personally, either. I am just a customer who is very impressed and satisfied.

Thank you, David. I have only worked my way through Tape 1, but I am very impressed and grateful for the series.

David--Your Brazilian Jiu Jitsu video is really excellent! When I wake up in the morning I find myself mentally rehearsing some of the techniques. I feel like I'm already getting a sense of the instinctual response. I've been away from jiujitsu for 4 months and don't plan to get back into it for at least a few more weeks, so I can't give you feedback right now about how well your approach is fairing against my competition.

Dear Dr. Ripley:

I received the first tape of your BJJ blue belt course yesterday and let me tell you that I'VE BEEN BLOWN AWAY!!! The quality of presentation and of course your incorporation of the speed learning exercises are incredible!

I've purchased many other tapes and have, literally, often fallen asleep while
watching. I started watching your tape and continued, completely enthralled throughout the whole tape despite having started the tape at 12:30 AM!! (Didn't get to sleep till past 3 am!!)

You sent me a letter explaining the money back guarantee, as I had from the onset purchase your whole Blue Belt course. Let me reiterate, I am more than completely satisfied!!

I can't wait for the rest of the set!

Thanks again and please keep me posted; I'll do the same!

Sincerely,
A. T.

Daniel Darrow (Joe Moreira student)

Daniel Darrow, one of Joe Moreira's top students is now using the accelerated learning methods. He sent the following testimonial in the Fall of 1998.

Dave,
Thank you for your innovative ideas for memorizing Brazilian Jiu Jitsu techniques. Now, let me tell you about the results. All I have to do now is think of my position and the position of my opponent and I instantly know all of the techniques in their proper order. This has already improved my game immensely. The moves now seem to come more by instinct which allows me to stay one step ahead of opponent because I thought of my next move before he thought of his. In addition, having a greater variety of tricks in my arsenal has the effect of always keeping my opponent worried so he has to be on the defense and thus has a hard time thinking attack.

Any way you look at it, your system will help me to achieve my Jiu Jitsu goals much sooner than I otherwise would have. Dave, thanks again for introducing me to your memory system. I look forward to continuing and will keep in touch.

Daniel Darrow

Aloha Dr. Ripley,

Well it's been three days today since I received Tape 1 with the manual and I couldn't forget any of the techniques if I tried. It's so amazing you see I'm the type of person who always without trying puts a lot of pressure on myself to accomplish a certain task, when I first started watching the video I thought "get all the techniques memorized?!" no way!! But I just did as the manual instructed and here I am I can't get them out of my mind, not that I'm trying. As soon as I think of a technique I can feel myself performing that technique I've also recorded the exercise on a separate video so I can do the exercises without going to the end of the tape and I made a tape so that when I drive to work and through the day I can do the daily exercises "3-4 times a day." I still kinda feel pressured about getting all 62 technique like this but that's usually how change and new things make one feel. Please keep me posted to when tapes 2 through 6 will be sent.

Much Mahalo It's so awesome,

Van Allen

Greetings,

I was very impressed with the book and tape one that I ordered, very informative and easy to follow. Don't know how you pulled it off but I'm amazed.

CHARLES R. TINIO

Dear Speed Jiujitsu,

I want to thank you for your wonderful videos. I've been doing BJJ for
over a year and I usually stick with just a few techniques, because if I
try new ones it takes me too long to execute. As a result I was one of
the students who never improved very much. So I stopped training so I
could save my elbows form getting continuously armbarred.

But I kept doing the techniques in my mind. And when I started
practicing again I was doing a lot better because I didn't have to "think"
about what to do. But I still wasn't able to use new techniques. So
when I found out about your product I knew it was what I needed all
along.

The way you've combined ancient and modern scientific techniques is
amazing. After two days I've memorized about 20 techniques that I can
perform without having to "think" step by step. I feel like I've added a
year of practicing Brazilian Jiujitsu everyday to my martial arts
training.

These videos are great for everybody who is serious about Jiujitsu.

Gregory

Dear Dr. Ripley,

I must say that I applaud your effort in bringing accelerated learning
techniques to the art of Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. I found the tapes to be an excellent learning experience. I think that your learning system can be used by anyone who's been away from the art for awhile looking to brush up on techniques, or someone new to the art.

Thanks,

Joe M

Sir,
I am very impressed with the tapes! My wife and I just had a baby girl, so I
have somewhat limited on time. However, the techniques that I have had the time to view seem to be deeply imprinted into my subconscious. I can visualize them in great detail, with great ease. You have quite an impressive product. When will the programs for the other ranks be available? I am going to conduct an experiment based on Christian Drapeau's Tae Kwon Do championship as stated on page 10 of "Superlearning 2000, by Ostrander and Schroeder. I will keep you informed as I prepare the hypothesis and get the ball rolling.

Scott M

Hi David,         3-3-2000

Yes, I've received the tapes. Thank you very much for the fast service.
I've only seen portions of the first tape since work has been keeping me
very busy. But the techniques that I have seen so far are stuck on my head.
I keep repeating the techniques in my head, visualizing it. I think this
set will really help me with my BJJ game. I'll update you as soon as I get
going with the whole set. Thanks again for producing this.

Dr. Ripley,
On the website it was mentioned that future courses will soon be
available for law enforcement. Do you have any information you can share on this? Any release date in mind? Also, will there be a purple belt course available in the future? I love the concepts your company promotes, it has accelerated my learning progress by leaps and bounds!! Thank you.

Bruce C

ROYLER GRACIE
WHITE BELT

PS. WHEN IS THE PURPLE BELT COURSE
COMING OUT?

Dear Dr. Ripley,

I wanted to tell you how satisfied I am with the Blue Belt Course I recently purchased.  I was amazed at how quickly I picked up on the many different movements and how easy they were to remember.  Without a doubt, this method of instruction greatly increases the learning curve of BJJ.

While reviewing the tapes, I found that they were both professional in quality and easily viewable.  Also, having these lessons on tape allowed me to rewind and review any portions of a lesson that I either missed or misunderstood.  I found that this also greatly decreased the time it takes to learn new moves.

What I also found amazing was that even movements that I did not spend much time on were stuck in my head as if I had practiced them for months.  This system of learning definitely works.

I was recently able to go to the gym to get some mat time practicing the moves I had learned.  I was very happy to see that the moves came very easily.  It took far less practice time to learn a move than I had experienced prior to viewing the tapes.  I am definitely happy that I found this course.   I absolutely believe that the Blue Belt Video Course can greatly reduce the overall time it takes a beginner to learn the basics of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

  Thanks again,

Steven

Hi David,
I'm on the third tape now. These tapes are awesome! I tried techniques from just the first tape and it really helped me in class sparring. The thing I Iike about the tapes are that the goals are clearly defined and the exercises really help you memorize the techniques. Although my instructor is excellent, it would take me a long time to learn all of these techniques in class. Please tell me you are working the next level of tapes. :) I'll write back as I go through the whole program. I'll also be happy to write a
testimonial but I think I'll hold off on telling all of the guys in class :)
Regards,
Russ

Accelerated Learning

for

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

Can't remember your techniques?

THIS IS THE ANSWER YOU'VE BEEN LOOKING FOR!

Instructor Robert Morales  (black belt under Joe Moreira (left) ) and purple belt champion Keith Shiroma.

The Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Blue Belt Course, teaches 66 techniques to help prepare the white belt student for the blue belt test. It consists of 7 DVD's, a 50 page book, Accelerated Learning for the Grappling Arts, which explains the principles of accelerated learning and how to use the DVD's.  Each of the tapes teaches ten to twelve techniques in an accelerated learning format and is about an hour and a half to an hour and 50 minutes in length. The positions covered on the tapes are: (note: We name the positions a little differently than other schools.) We name the positions a little differently than other schools.

DVD 1 Mount Top, Back Top
DVD 2 Guard Bottom
DVD 3 Guard Bottom continued. Cross Side Top
DVD 4 Guard Top, Mount Bottom, Open Guard Bottom
DVD 5 Cross Side Bottom, Open Guard Top, Knee on Stomach Top
DVD 6 Knee on Stomach Bottom, North-South Top and Bottom, Turtle Top and Bottom, Back Top
DVD 7 Takedowns, Drills

After each technique is demonstrated on the DVD there is approximately 4 to 5 minutes of accelerated learning exercises. By the end of each DVD you will know and be able to remember all the details of each technique and would be able to perform the techniques from memory. By continuing to work with the accelerated learning exercises at the end of each DVD or a recording or the accelerated learning exercise the techniques are quickly developed to the point where their application while rolling is second nature. This course teaches a new and powerful way of learning. The accelerated learning methods in this course can be applied to techniques learned in class as well to other video tape courses.
